A lawyer with about 38 years of experience, Johan started his career in the Department of Justice. He joined the Justice training program that entailed in-service training, which assisted employees in gaining practical prosecutorial experience while studying law, on a part-time basis, at the University of South Africa [UNISA].

During his ten years at the Department of Justice, Johan acted as Prosecutor and later as Magistrate. As Magistrate, he presided over Criminal and Civil Trials. Johan left the Department of Justice to become a Lawyer and was admitted as an Attorney in the High Court of South Africa in 1984 and later as an Advocate in the High Court of South Africa.

As an Attorney, Johan appeared in the Magistrate- and High Courts of South Africa. Johan successfully defended high profile criminal trials in The High Court of South Africa. He also argued criminal and civil appeals in the High Court of South Africa and acted on behalf of plaintiffs and defendants in civil trials.

Johan has extensive experience in various areas of the law and, in specific, white-collar crimes, corruption, racketeering and money laundering. He also has extensive experience in family law and children law.

Johan also joined litigation in the High Court of South Africa as “amicus curiae” in litigation against the Minister of Health regarding the scope of practice of Psychologists in South Africa.

As a Lawyer, Johan assists clients, including the drafting of contracts, commercial transactions, estates, liquidations and sequestration applications, labor disputes, and general legal advice.

Johan was the legal advisor of the Leopards Rugby Union and Director of the Leopard Rugby Union.
